Here’s what I didn’t expect when I started digging into eight years of data on local music scenes: the cities with the highest rates of streaming platform adoption also saw the most resilient local music cultures. Not despite the digital transformation. Because of it.
That finding sent me down a research rabbit hole that challenges pretty much everything the music industry has been saying about technology and authenticity for the past decade.
The Rio Paradox
In 2021, a group of funk producers in Rio de Janeiro did something radical. They built their own platform.
Not a promotional tool on top of Spotify. Not a clever use of Instagram. The research suggests we’ve been framing the question wrong. The threat to local music scenes isn’t digital platforms. It’s the concentration of platform ownership and the extraction of value from communities to distant shareholders.
When communities control their digital infrastructure—even just one piece of it—they can use technology to strengthen rather than dilute their cultural identity. When they don’t, they’re subject to the economics and aesthetics of platforms designed for growth metrics that don’t align with cultural sustainability.
“Local” in music culture isn’t about rejecting digital tools. It’s about communities having agency over how those tools shape their artistic ecosystem.
The venues that survive won’t be the ones that resist streaming. They’ll be the ones that integrate it on their terms. The scenes that thrive won’t be the ones that avoid technology. They’ll be the ones that build (or control) their own.
And the policy interventions that work won’t be cultural preservation efforts that try to freeze scenes in amber. They’ll be infrastructure investments that give communities the resources to evolve on their own terms.
The data is clear: technology isn’t killing local music culture. The question is who controls the technology.
